The damaged section must be located and exposed carefully, with the irrigation supply shut off and the line depressurized. The right fitting depends on pipe material and location.

Before exposing an underground pipe
Stop watering the affected zone and mark the wet area. Before any excavation, follow DigAlert’s 811 process and wait for the required utility responses. Utility marking does not locate every private irrigation line. Water can travel through soil before surfacing, so the visible puddle is not always directly above the break.
Inspection and repair steps
- Isolate the line and locate the leaking segment.
- Excavate carefully, remove damage and fit compatible pipe and connectors.
- Flush, pressure-test, backfill and check every head on the zone.

UC ANR recommends routine checks for leaks at heads and connections. Rancho Water’s use tools can help a district customer see whether water use changed after a repair.
Cost and next step
The repair cost depends on the fault, replacement parts, access and any digging or restoration needed. Ask for the proposed scope and estimate before work begins. Our sprinkler repair cost guide explains the main factors.
